THE REFEREE

Foul Detection

SATISFACTORY

Comment...

The Referee made some early detection on fouls in this game. In the 4th minute he showed his authority by stamping down on pushing. There was good communication between the assistants and the referee when in the 50th minute the assistant referee rightly flagged for a foul which occured near his position. The Referee correctly awarded the free kick. In the 46th the assistant referee flagged for offside. This was a very tight decision and was correct. However as the player was not interfering with play, the assistant referee should have waited until the player interfered with play before the offside was awarded. In the 68th Minute a very cheap penalty was awarded to Brazil for an impede. However this could be down to the view that the referee had and did not have the benefit of video replays like many of us. Finally a mystery free kick was awarded when no offence occurred, this incident happened in the 83rd minute.

Positioning

GOOD

Comment...

Making very good use of the diagonal with the assistant referees, but there was some places in the match where he could have been a bit closer to play which could have made his decisions a little more accurate.

Man Management

EXCELLENT

Comment...

He used his man-management very well and showed it in the 9th minute where he  paused play at a corner kick to speak to one player from each team to talk about the pushing happening at corner kicks. Also in the 24th minute the referee explained his decision to players which is a very good example of man management. Also in the 82nd minute he played advantage to Croatia which they benefited a lot from which helped the flow of the game. Throughout the game the referee used the vanishing spray which helped the referee to manage the game as he was able to have more control over the way at free kicks.

Card Issuing

GOOD

Comment...

He gave cards out in the 26, 64, 69 and 87 minute of the game. These were all yellow cards. They were all correctly given in a suitable manner and they all warranted a yellow card.

Fitness

GOOD

Comment...
FIFA make sure that all referees that officiate in this competition are to a suitable standard when it comes to fitness. The Referee was always up with play and showed a good level of fitness.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES

Assistant 1 -  GOOD 8.4
Assistant 2 -  DISAPPOINTING 7.7

Comment...
Assistant 1 was not really involved in any major decision making, however assistant 2 failed to notice that the Brazil player was not interfering with play before raising his flag which caused play to stop.

OVERALL
