Welcome to The Referee Reviewers!

So this is the first ever post of a brand new project in which we aim to assess the performances of officials in the Premier League and other top level competitions.

We are working on gathering a group of reviewers, who will all be qualified referees themselves, by early December, so we can start reviewing as soon as possible. I should point out that the aim of this is to provide fair, impartial and constructive reviews on the performance of a referee in a particular game. Our reviewers will not be assigned to watch matches in which the team they support is involved, to ensure fairness.

We aim to become a reference point for people to see how officials performed in certain matches. Of course, a lot depends on interpretation and personal opinion, so to make it easier for our reviewers and the readers, we will be reviewing in fields such as;

  • Positioning
  • Foul detection
  • Man management
  • Fitness
  • Use of cards
Reviewers can award 'excellent', 'good', 'average', 'poor' or 'unsatisfactory' for each of these fields and this will even out into a general 'good' or 'poor', for example. The reviewer will also award a mark out of 10 to the officials.

We will be entering the officials into a table to see who consistently performs the best, but as we are only just starting, we may need some time before we can consistently review referees week in week out and attain a fair table.
