THE REFEREE
Foul Detection
GOOD
Comment...
The referee's foul detection was generally good. The majority of fouls he awarded throughout the match were correct. The referee allowed a physical game to be played and was generally consistent with his approach of determining what was a foul and what wasn't.

However, in the 1st minute of additional time in the first
half, he failed to penalise a foul from
West Brom #3 on Newcastle #14 that was just outside the penalty area and
arguably DOGSO. There were also a
couple of incidences when the referee awarded free kicks which were not fouls.
Positioning
Positioning
GOOD
Comment...
The referee's positioning throughout the match was good. He maintained enough of a distance from play so as not to get in the way, but also was close enough to be able to see accurately. In areas which his assistants were of an ample distance, he also used them to manage fouls in their respective thirds. In addition, his positioning at corner kicks and set pieces was also good.

Man Management
SATISFACTORY
Comment...
The referee's man-management was average. He cautioned Newcastle #24 in the 30th minute. Despite, having committed a couple of minor fouls beforehand, he had not as yet appeared to give any sort of more formal rebuke before deciding to issue a caution. The foul in which he produced the caution after was also a very minor offense. There were other players who had committed as many fouls and escaped punishment or even mere warnings entirely.

Comment...
All cautions were justifiable in line with the LOTG. However, as mentioned in the Man Management section, the caution of Newcastle's #24 could have been perhaps been avoided by better man management.

THE ASSISTANT REFEREES
Assistant 1: GOOD
Assistant 2: GOOD
Comment...
Both Assistant's had strong performances with all offside
decisions appearing to be correct. Assistant 1 made several impressive offside calls. Both Assistant Referees also assisted the
referee well with the awards of throw ins and detecting fouls.
